I was organizing art, music events and was working on a concept of “kid’s club” - informal studying, where kids would be able to see where is their natural potential, their inner strengths are. My name is Sofia, and I’m a rising junior at UC Santa Barbara, home for the summer. I have been babysitting on and off since 7th grade. I’ve worked primarily for three families. The first two roles involved caring for one child each (ages 4 and 6), while the third involved caring for three siblings (ages 2, 5, and 8), including one child with special needs. Caring for an 8-year-old boy with brain cancer, which affected both his physical and cognitive abilities, taught me patience, adaptability, and how to communicate when verbal communication was limited.
