Unfortunately, I tend to get sick easily, and when that happens it affects my ability to fulfill commitments to other families and responsibilities. If a child is actively sick when I arrive and I was not informed beforehand, I may need to leave. My philosophy and approach to care-taking is to create a nurturing and engaging connection with children, which I believe is important for their feeling of safety, comfort, and healthy development. I have been babysitting for 15 years. Most recently I had a regular nanny gig 3 days/week for the one-year-old daughter of a music colleague. My broader experience ranges from weekly nannying for a two-year old in Manhattan, to sitting for 3 sisters ages 5-10 and helping them choreograph a living-room Free To Be You and Me dance production, to working daily with fifteen infants in a Kibbutz nursery in Israel. As a sitter, I love taking children outside to engage with the world--to parks, museums, libraries, age-suitable concerts or movement classes. I am a professional opera singer, with a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, so I especially value the importance of music and play. I love singing to kids, finding out what their favorite songs are, teaching them songs, and exposing them to the incredible world of music. In the home, I engage children in conversation, do art projects, read books, engage in other creative projects like writing plays, or cooking. I also believe in the necessity of quiet time, and gauge when children need time to rest or be quiet. For older kids, I am equipped to help with homework, other school related projects, and practice of music lessons. INFANTS and BABIES I adore infants, and find that the best way to nurture them is through holding them, singing to them, playing with them in developmentally appropriate games, and taking them outside on walks in a carrier. AVAILABILITY I am a free-lance opera singer and voice teacher, and therefore have a flexible schedule including availabilities throughout the day and evening, both week-days and weekends. WHERE I LIVE AND GETTING AROUND I live in JP, and drive a Prius, though also enjoy traveling by bike, foot, and public transit! SICK CHILD? Because I rely on the health of my body for my performance, and because I hold myself responsible for not passing on germs to other children or families, my personal policy is to not babysit for sick children.
