Hi I’m Maddie and I currently work as an outdoor educator making the transition to classroom teaching this fall. I’ve worked in various childcare environments, finding the most reward from programs that prioritize outdoor experience, hands-on learning, creativity, and play. My interest in working with kids began in high school through various summer nannying and babysitting gigs, support at local in-home daycares and eventually with a local preschool. I’ve spent the past 5 years working in more structured outdoor-based school-year programs and summer camps. Within all of these roles I’ve worked with children of all ages, needs, backgrounds and experiences, allowing for me to have a deep understanding of how to support each child as an individual. I really appreciate being able to connect with all kids, and find great connection with people on the spectrum, or with behavioral needs. When working with kids, I love to find a balance between being energetic and silly with them while still maintaining respect and expectations. As an individual I could be described as silly, loud, and caring, I love spending time outside, doing all sorts of crafts and listening to live music. I am really excited to spend my summer hanging out with some cool kids and have a really flexible schedule. I’m open to consistent opportunities or occasional ones as well. If the fit is right I would also be open to maintaining a relationship into the school year for weeknight or weekend jobs. I am fingerprinted and background checked in CA, have an up to date Adult and Infant CPR and First Aid certification, a Wilderness First Aid certification as well as a Mental Health First Aid certification.

Hello, I am Sonja, and I am a Berkeley Native. A proud graduate of BHS in 1986, and received my BA @ SFU in 1990. I have a Masters Degree in Adult Education and hold a Sub Permit in which I can work at any K-12 school. I choose my assignments and subjects with care. It goes without saying, I usually take assignments in Berkeley. Although, I can work anywhere, Berkeley is my home. I attended Thousand Oaks in the 70's, and was recently their year long floating sub from 2[removed]. I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. It definitely proved my flexibility as each day as my responsibilities held something different. That could be supporting TK - 5 in any capacity. Did I say I did this without training? I navigated daily from listening to stories, wiping tears, lunch duty, to PE teacher. You name it, I did it. What a life experience for me to become attached to these little people. I have an 9 year old great nephew and we have an amazing relationship. I'm grateful for his character and open mind, as I believe our relationship prepared me to work with children. Actually I babysat his mom, so yes, I’ve done this for years! (Decades) I'm a great caregiver because I am nurturing and patient with an amazing sense of humor. It goes without saying, I am flexible. Granted, I'm a bit old school, and I set boundaries of respect on both ends. When a child needs correction, it can be done with care by listening and explaining why we should make good choices. BUSD instills some great strategies and honestly they help me in my personal and professional life when working with adults. I love to dance and listen to music and so do most children, so there is balance and always fun. Reading books to children and teaching them new words is always a plus for me. One of my greatest strengths is organization. Whether that includes a clean classroom, getting clothes ready in advance, packing lunch etc. I am a great at multi-tasking while keeping structure. In conclusion, I'm just a normal fun and laid back person with a simple life, and I have evolved. I work and go to church. Years ago no one could have told me I could deal with an entire class of children. My ideal job, is a clean location, organized and detailed instructions and just good fun people that trust their child ( children) are in good hands.
